After Arif Zulkifli graduated from Communication study at University of Indonesia, he started his career as a Tempo journalist in 1993. When Tempo was banned in 1994, he moved to Media Indonesia and back again to work with Tempo in 1998. Six years later, he was appointed as the managing director of Tempo.
He is the winner of the Elizabeth O’Neil Journalism Award from Australian Government and also contributed his thoughts in The United Nations Convention against Corruption in 2013. He was also a member of experts team for United Nation convention in journalism investigation role against corruption in Vienna, Austria, 2013.
